is a flexible concept that can be used as a gestalt or theoretical
framework to generate performance actions, poetry, music, or visual
work. The piece consists of 235 digits in succession, randomly derived
from the numeric categorizations and labeling methods applied by the
scientific community to classify and map the human genetic code. The
website maintained by the National Cancer Institute provided most
of the primary source material. Performance of this work requires
the musicians to more or less abandon the conventional playing techniques
associated with their instrument. To summarize the process, the performers'
fingers behave like toggle switches activated by numbers rather than
specifically written pitches. While processing the numeric flow, complexities
arise due to the vast amount of possibilities available to the performer
at any given moment. Appropriate interpretations are detailed in performance
notes that accompany the score.
